Jessica has been a healthcare provider specialized in pulmonary hypertension (PH) for almost 20 years. The disease is a high blood pressure in the lungs that ultimately leads to heart failure and death. The prognosis is worse than lung cancer or ovarian cancer. There is no cure. It tends to affect younger women although it is still a rare disease.
Jessica decided to climb the Mount Rainier in June as a fundraiser and awareness event for PH. The low oxygen in high-altitude causes temporary PH that will go away when one returns to sea level. Therefore, she gave herself the same disease that Julia had, PH. Julia is patient of Jessica and this is how they became close friends. Jessica was paired with Julia for the "Let Me Be Your Lungs" event, where she represented her on the climb.
Jessica: “Julia has a resolve unlike any I have ever seen. She has raised over $100,000 for PH research, and she faces her disease with class and bravery. I always call her a warrior. One day, we were on Facebook declaring that each other was the bigger warrior. That is where the idea of photographing ourselves with warrior paint together was born…."
